Ed 178 Poetry in the K-12 Classroom
Wed. 8:15 am - 2:00 pm (student hours vary)
onsite at El Sol Academy of Arts and Sciences in Santa Ana, CA.
Instructor: Sue Cronmiller
Course Goals
Students experience school day fieldwork in UCI instructed poetry workshops in bi-lingual 3rd and 4th grade classrooms. Supporting lectures provide workshop content, pedagogical framework, practice and experience commenting on student work via the on line Writing LAB. In preparation for fieldwork, students read and understand a pan-historic and multicultural range of poetic texts; learn instructional preparation and delivery skills in K-12 classroom environments; learn and employ strategies for commenting on K-12 written work; use the internet to support students’ revision in the writing process; develop dialogue, discussion and presentation skills.
May be repeated up to two times. (Fieldwork in the elementary school runs all year in the same classrooms; therefore, although pedagogical foundations remain the same, fieldwork writing lessons and supporting course work includes new material each quarter.
Description
This course combines on campus lectures with K-12 fieldwork. The weekly on campus lecture is designed to support weekly fieldwork instruction. The weekly fieldwork takes place during the school day in 3rd and 4th grade classrooms at El Sol Academy of Arts and Sciences in Santa Ana. Fieldwork instruction is designed and supervised onsite by the 178 course instructor. During fieldwork hours, undergraduates receive instruction and modeling from the course instructor and assist the instructor by leading small groups in writing, discussion, revision, and keyboarding during Writing LAB sessions.

Revision and the on line Writing LAB
Revision, as part of the writing process, is an integral component of this course. Revision means, literally, “to see again.” Each on site lesson will be repeated so that students may improve their descriptive imagery and make terms and vocabulary more specific. Once content is revised, we will edit for spelling, grammar and punctuation. The revision process in class leads to the development of a final draft that is ready for submission to the Writing LAB. Once a piece of work is submitted to the Writing LAB, it may undergo another series of revisions, in response to an on line editor’s review and commentary. Once a piece of work is “finished,” it will be published on the UCI Poetry Academy on line journal for K-6: Mind’s Eye.
Each writing lesson will have its own guidelines for revision.
Revision for the course involves synthesizing all field notes and case study entries into a comprehensive in class presentation.
